"Murray plays a splendidly booting trombone"

I love people and music.  I am best known as a trombonist and improviser. I like making things with others. I have performed and recorded in a wide variety of contexts and in a number of innovative ensembles.

In contemporary music I have appeared as a guest soloist with the Scottish Clarinet Quartet and performed regularly with the Glasgow-based contemporary music group Symposia.

As an improviser I have performed with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra through which I have had the opportunity of working and recording with George Lewis, Maggie Nichols, Barry Guy and Evan Parker in a variety of different contexts. I have also recorded in Germany with Saxophonist John Tchicai and Joachim Irmler (Faust).

Recently I have recorded albums with  Bravest Boat, Bennett/Murray/Vulliamy, and Martin Archer- Engine Room Favourites.

I have also recently recorded albums with Aby Vulliamy, and Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, and toured extensively across Europe.

Locally, I have performed with my nearest brass band Hall Royd Band. I also play with The Yorkshire Trombone Quartet. I play regularly with the Gordon Tetley Big Band- they have a very impressive collective age.
